Composer James A. Beckel graduated from Indiana University's School of Music and has been the principal trombonist with the Indianapolis Symphony since 1969. He is on the musical faculty at DePauw University and the University of Indianapolis and is an active composer and arranger with his works in performance by many professional orchestras around the country. Encore Music Company is proud to present this original composition by James Beckel entitled "The Glass Bead Game". It is written for solo horn with a piano accompaniment and is loosely based on the Herman Hesse novel of the same title. The musical idea in the piece is meant to represent Herman Hesse's existential philosophy about life. Simply put, he believed that man exists as an individual in a purposeless universe that is basically hostile. The movements in the work demonstrate man's war against the earth's environment, the peace man finds in history and religion, and finally man's ultimate end, death. It is a wonderful work filled with tension, passion and beauty and one that all audiences will enjoy! "The Glass Bead Game - French Horn (Instrumental Folio)" has a sales rank of 2915.
